Hobie sailing has its trends and sometimes those trends are hard to predict.
Here in my part of the USA, we are seeing a resurgence of the Hobie 14. Who would have predicted this, –Hobie 14’s haven’t been manufactured in the USA since the early 1990’s and until recently we hadn’t seen any at regattas in a long long time. What’s happening now?
Sailors of other 16s, 17s and 18s have switched and made the Hobie 14 their primary race boat. There are a variety of reasons behind this but collectively the Hobie 14 is back. One couple that used to race together on the Hobie 16 now both compete against each other on the Hobie 14. When I asked “why the switch” the wife told me she had become bored with crewing and this was a new challenge. Whatever the reason, it’s exciting to see Hobie 14’s at the regattas again. Hobie Cat Europe is still building the 14 and recently received another order for more new 14’s. There are 40 Hobie 14’s registered for the upcoming world championships with sailors coming from five continents.
